Car insurance companies all calculate their rates in different ways though the main factors all tend to be the same. You can find different types of rates depending on the car you drive, the company you choose and your driving history to name a few factors. You can even find companies that specialize in insurance for collectible cars, high risk drivers and teenage drivers.

One of the main factors that will determine the rates you are paying for insurance is the make and model of your car. Typically sportier cars or cars that are hard to find, as in not many models are made, will have very high insurance rates because the cars are more likely to be stolen and if they should be damaged and need repairs much more difficult to fix as you may need a specialist and it can be very hard to find parts.

However if you are driving an older car that is less likely to be stolen and can be fixed by any mechanic than the insurance rates will be much lower. Additionally if you install in any special safety features such as an alarm, airbags or other items this can drop the rates even further. Most countries or states will have information on the most sought after vehicles for car thieves as many cars are just stolen for the parts.

Younger drivers, under the age of 25, also tend to have higher rates because they are considered a higher risk than older drivers. Much of this has to do with experience as younger drivers may not know how to react in a range of circumstances. Females are also considered to be safer drivers though recently females have started to even out with male drivers.

Your home location and the area you drive will also affect your rates as areas of less congestion will have less traffic which equates to less accidents. If you drive your car daily in the city then there is greater chance of damage hence an increased rate.

There are also areas that may be associated with very high rates of stolen cars which will increase the rate. If you only drive your car a small amount then you can get discounts on low mileage cars. Basically the less you drive your car the less likely you are to have an accident and the less chance that the insurance company will have to pay out on a claim.

Your driving record is a key factor in your rates and if you have many accidents and speeding tickets then you will be paying a lot for insurance. There are steps you can take, such as participating in a defensive driving class, that can lower your rates but it can take many years of safe and problem free driving to erase those tickets from your record.

There are various types of car insurance including Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance as you will find that insurance varies depending on the company, what you are insuring exactly and your previous driving expertise.
