So your teen is now old enough to drive? This should have been a clearly joyous moment but for some reasons, it’s filled with mixed feelings. While you pray that your teen stays safe behind wheels, you’re also concerned that it would raise your costs. Sure, you’d spend more on gas now. Worse still is the fact that the family’s auto insurance spend is going to increase by as much as three times just because of one driver — albeit their beloved kid. Is there anything your teen can do to help you cut down costs? A lot! I’ll share them with you…
I will list several things and then dwell more on just one (the last point)…
1. Let your kid pay at least part of the bill if they must drive. If they are responsible for paying part of the bills they’ll be more open to suggestions that will reduce your rate.
2. Let them be the secondary driver and preferably on an older car that will do just fine with the state’s minimum.
3. Don’t allow your teen to learn driving from fellow teens. If they did learn on their own, let them take a course in defensive driving. Beyond the fact that insurers will reward such with lower rates, your kid would be the safer for it.
4. Encourage your teen to maintain straight A’s or a minimum of B’s. Auto insurers believe students who maintain good grades are less prone to recklessness.
5. Kids who drive cars that have high safety ratings pay less on auto insurance.
6. Whenever they can, let your teen use the public transport system. This reduces their total mileage and, by extension, their premium. This is without counting the precious dollars you’d save on gas.
7. Teens are very comfortable with the internet (We all know how hard it is to get them off those computers). Therefore, put them to good use…
Your teen will definitely do a more extensive comparison shopping online than you’ll do. Don’t they have more time on their hands than you do?
Let them know that you’re looking for the best rate that also gives you the right protection. Let them get and compare quotes up to five reputable sites.
They should make a list of about five of the best quotes returned. You can easily check this list to ensure you have the best in price and value. This simple action will save you several hundreds in premium dollars.
